Commander: Y'shtola, Night's Blessed

Every cat here carries nine lives and can give one away, and the dead walk for exactly as long as that lent life burns at their throat - so the cats, not the priests, hold the dead, and every walking dead body has a cat with it. Y'shtola is the cat-folk warlock who carries what the whole realm owes, with a dark hollow where her own ember used to sit. A complete 100-card Y'shtola, Night's Blessed deck for Commander: a proxy deck with custom card art on every card, from the moonlit temple pool to the dry catacombs under it.

The world

The Ninefold Night

A high-fantasy realm where every cat carries nine lives and can give one away, and where the dead walk only for as long as a lent life burns in them - so cats, not priests, hold the dead, and every walking dead body has a cat with it, riding its shoulder, carried in its arms or padding ahead of it. A lent life always shows the same way: one small warm amber ember at the hollow of the throat, with a hair-thin thread of the same amber running back to the cat that lent it, and a cold dark hollow where the ember used to sit on whoever gave it. The lent dead are whole and quiet, dry grey skin, their own good clothes, eyes closed or clouded milk-white - never rotted, never torn, never wounded. Everyone here is a cat-folk warlock, a human or dwarf of the old orders, or one of the lent dead, and the materials are the ones this realm really has: pale temple stone, bone, verdigris bronze, candle wax, oiled black silk, salt-stained linen, cold still water, hemp cord and fine old gold wire. Nothing is modern, mechanical, industrial or digital. Creatures that are not cats stay true to their own kind, and each carries exactly one small cat mark - slit pupils, a notched ear, a small bronze cat bell on a cord, or a cat sitting somewhere on them.

How it plays

A white-blue-black spellslinger deck that wins by casting spells, not by attacking. Y'shtola drains every opponent for 2 and gains you 2 life each time you cast a noncreature spell costing three or more, and draws you a card at the end of any turn a player lost four life. Papalymo Totolymo and Lyse Hext add their own trigger to every spell, G'raha Tia turns them into Hero tokens, and Emet-Selch of the Third Seat lets you cast them a second time out of the graveyard. Eighteen artifacts led by Sol Ring, Gilded Lotus and Thran Dynamo pay for all of it a turn or two early, Necropotence, Rhystic Study, Phyrexian Arena and Dig Through Time keep the cards coming, and Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Flawless Maneuver and Mother of Runes protect the engine for free. Propaganda, Solitary Confinement and Blind Obedience keep the table off you while Toxic Deluge, Dusk // Dawn and The Battle of Bywater clear the board, and Exsanguinate closes the game. Thirty-three lands with duals, fetches and shocks make the three colours easy. Built from a proven decklist with over 68,000 views and 619 likes, so this EDH proxy deck plays as well as it looks. The full decklist is in the photos.
